Tuesday Evening CES Roundup for January 12, 2020

Here are a few of the CES related news bits that caught my eye this afternoon

Mechanical Keyboard from ASUS Includes a Detachable Number Pad

This is brilliant.  In the type of work I do (when I actually have a job….) a keyboard with a number pad is almost necessary, and when I’m working on a keyboard without one, I feel like it can slow me down.  But outside of work, I rarely use it and wish the keyboard didn’t have one .  ASUS is looking to grab the attention of people like me, and creating a mechanical keyboard with a number pad that attaches via magnets.  This means that when you need it, you can attach it and get full use, and when you’re done working detach it and get that desk space back.

This is something I’d seriously consider if I were in a position to need it.

ASUS Teases 32 inch 4k Monitor with 120Hz Support

The most drool worthy monitor I’ve come across at CES might just be this new ASUS monitor due to hit in Q2 with an unspecified (but likely very high) price.  This 32 inch monitor sports 4k resolution and runs up to 120hz.  The monitor features two HDMI 2.1 ports for devices to drive it at that full resolution and speed.

I won’t be able to afford this. I won’t be able to recommend anyone actually buy it, since it’ll probably be north of $1500 in Canada and that’s not the kind of money anyone should spend on a monitor. I don’t even have a computer that could really drive this thing.

But I want it.

Samsung Has a Plan For You to Reuse Your Old Phones

In the avalanche of early news, I forgot about this one.  Samsung has an idea for an “official” way to repurpose old phones to serve other purposes.  There is already a market for people who will take older phones and reuse them as smart home controllers, or a dedicated way to control a smart speaker, etc.  Samsung is looking to take that idea to the next level with a plan to actually allow people to apply an “update” to an older Galaxy phone that will turn it into a dedicated device that serves that kind of function.  There isn’t a date as to when this may happen, but the company says it is working on it, and hopes to have more to share later this year.

Razer Mask RGB Lights

It is CES. And we are just out of the year 2020. So Razer has an N95 mask with RGB lighting and a way to amplify voices to make someone easier to understand.

We live in weird times.
